Eating and Drinking

Quality food and wine abound in the region.  Foie gras, prunes from Agen, strawberries, Cepe mushrooms, colourful markets and medieval fetes are never far away.

As it is foie gras country, there are ducks and geese seemingly round every corner.

The wines of Bergerac, Duras, Marmande, Buzet, Cahors and Bordeaux can all be considered local wines and there is a choice available at a price to suit every pocket.

3 - 6 euros  will give you a decent bottle when purchased at a local supermarket.  If serious stocking up is your aim, head for Leclerc at Fumel (just over the river towards Montayral) 15 minutes away or Leclerc at Villeneuve-sur-Lot.

We truly believe that if you cook local food, meat, fruit and veg, then you live more cheaply than in the UK.

Restaurants

(this is not an exhaustive list)

Try the local Auberge in the village - cheap and cheerful at lunch but more expensive in the evening, new management since 2011.

Le Café at Gavaudun - no fixed price menu but quality food in relaxed and unpretentious surroundings.

Le Donjon, Gavaudun (up the hill) lunchtimes in the week only where you can join the local workers for a relais routiers type meal.

Edward I (Hotel) Monpazier - Dutch owned and aims at fine cuisine although limited choice.
Le Privilege, Monpazier - Jazz Café, liked by many of our visitors.

Bistrot 2, Monpazier - join the locals for Sunday lunch, good service and reasonable prices.

Chez Minou, Monpazier, pizzeria, children welcome, good reports.

Restaurant de la Bastide, Monpazier - recommended .

All restaurants around the square in Monflanquin are attractive.

Le Bon Chabrol, St. Aubin near Monflanquin, spotless and excellent value.

Le Moulinal - camp site restaurant - takeaway available.

Hotel du Centre/Sauvetat sur Lemance - nice garden at the back, reasonable menus and authentic country cooking.

La Bruceliere Issigeac - fresh fish, friendly staff. Worth the trip.

Chez Alain Issigeac - consistently good food and service, the patron's moustache is impressive.

> La Terrasse, Grezels (on the Lot towards Figeac) - lunchtime menu, genial host approx 15 euros but usually no choice.

And if you don’t mind driving, our favourite for an occasion:-

Le Vieux Logis, Tremolat on the Dordogne River due North of Monpazier approx 40 minutes drive, not cheap especially as it now has a Michelin star, but fine food in beautiful surroundings whether indoors or out.
